Breaking Down The Stages Of A Guitar Amplifier

For an electric guitar to produce any kind of sound, it must be connected to one of the input sockets of an amplifier using what’s known as a “lead.” This is a piece of screened cable with jack plugs on either ends. Although amplifiers are available in many shapes and forms, and the specific features of each one different, there are a number of functions common to nearly every model. These functions include input sockets, channel input level, tone controls, and a master volume control.

Guitar amplifiers work in a variety of different ways, but regardless of whether they are combos or heads and stacks, or whether they utilize valve or solid-state circuitry, there are many common operations that every single amplifier must be capable of performing.

Two fundamental stages exist. They are the pre-amplifier (usually called the “pre-amp”) which controls the input volume and tone, while the power amplifier is in charge of the overall volume. The majority of the tonal coloration happens during the crucial pre-amp stage.

The process begins with an input signal coming from the guitar. Invariably this will be a jack socket. There are also amplifiers that contain more than one input socket, which can sometimes be used to allow a second guitar or even a different electronic instrument to be plugged in. It can also be used to change between different settings, something that can be estremely useful when deciding on the different volumes being used for playing, such as rhythm or lead guitar.

The channel input volume is something that can be altered by the guitar itself. However, the volume of the initial signal is determined by the input channel volume control. This pre-amplifier stage will boost the signal, which then is passed through to the equalization stage.

Next are the tone controls or “EQ”. In its simplest form, this part of the process can consist of only a single bass and treble control, although more sophisticated models usually feature a mid-range control. Some brands like the Mesa Boogie combos will use a graphic equalizer as oppossed to the conventional tone controls. What this does is split the sound spectrum into five or more bands, and that provides much more precise tonal programming at the amplifier stage.

During the final stage of the process, the output signal coming from the pre-amplifier is passed on to the power amplifier. The master volume will then be the final control prior to the signal being output to the loudspeaker. The master volume controls the overall output of the amplifier, no matter how many input channels there are, or their settings.

Lastly, some of the sophisticated valve amplifiers will often contain a variety of intermediary stages. Many amplifiers will also feature “lead” or “overdrive” channels which are completely separate from the standard volume ones. There are also some classic amplifiers that have built-in sound effects like reverb, or even tremolo.

Many of the reviews and comments that I have read indicate a strong favorable opinion of this amplifier from VHT. One reviewer stated that the new VHT company is really delivering some great amps at a great price. The Special 6 Combo Amplifier is good looking and hand wired, making it a great place to start for those who are changing from a solid state to a tube amplifier.

Another consumer who has played for quite awhile and has owned a good amount of high end gear, absolutely dislikes carrying heavy gear, and taking nice amps out. Also, a big concern with tube amps is the amount of abuse they may sustain when driving from gig to gig. The Special 6 is a great amp that fixes this.

It has great tone, and is very well constructed. Due to the price, the reviewer actually purchased two of them and they stated that when run simultaneously, these amps sound huge. There’s enough headroom to run it clean, and get all your gain from your pedals. It seems to be great with pedals, and it was also mentioned that it even sounds very nice with a 10″ speaker.

Their conclusion was to do yourself a favor. Pick up this amp if you have a chance, it will save your back as well as your bank account, because it’s definitely worth the money. Other things said have been that it is an unbelievable value and it really delivers. It has a great overdrive sound, but yet it has a surprisingly sweet clean tone. The simple circuit makes swapping tubes interesting no doubt.

For the worst review of this amplifier, here is what was said. The consumer plugged in and the first thing they got was a shrill, thin sound. They replaced the stock tubes with an old Motorola 6V6 and a Groove Tube 12AX7. After this, the amplifier mellowed out. Unfortunately after about an hour of play it began to short out.

The speaker output jack is made of plastic and it had melted. The reviewer did say that it is better than most amps in the price range, but they wouldn’t buy another one of these amps. The other thing that we found was that a different reviewer stated that the factory installed tubes sound ok, but you won’t regret making the decision to install something better. However, the 10″ speaker from the factory was generally well received.

With the nice amount of headroom this amplifier provides along with very high ratings from nearly every single reviewer, I will go ahead and give it my high recommendations. Plenty of strength and an overall very good buy.

Choosing The Best Guitar Amplifier

Choosing the best guitar amplifier for your specific needs can turn out to be trickier than you might realize. Often times the main focus is on what guitar can give you the best sound, which guitar looks and feels the nicest, all without much thought being put into the lowly amplifier.

This could turn out to be a big mistake because the bottom line is that someone may have a mid-range to lower end guitar being played through a nice amp, making it sound somewhat descent. Whereas even if one plays a high-end guitar it will still sound awful through that bad amplifier.

Some things to consider if you are looking at purchasing a new guitar amplifier would obviously be price. Guitar amplifiers can range anywhere from under $100 all they up into the thousands of dollars. A common 15-watt amp is what many settle on when they pick out their first amp. Due mostly to the lower price.

While cheaper ones will make adiquite practice amplifiers for students, I would still recommend looking around at the next step up in quality, and here is why.

If you have never had the luxery of pluggin into one of the better model guitar amplifiers I would strongly urge you to head down to your local music shop and ask an employee to help set you up on one to try out. I can understand if you would be shy about it if you aren’t comfortable with your skill level on the guitar but trust me, if you can swallow your pride for even a little bit while you test it out, you will be more discerning in your taste.

The basic models usually just don’t cut it compared to most of the better amps. The sound could be said to be “tolerable” and that is about it. Subconciously a newer guitarist could become frustrated having the frame of mind that “nothing they play ever sounds good” all because the amplifier doesn’t kick out nice tones.

Another problem to add to the list is that as a guitarist improves on their skill, they will most likely want to start jamming with other musicians including drummers. And we all know how loud percussion instruments can be. Smaller amplifiers simply won’t have the power to give off higher levels of volume to keep pace with the drums.

Make sure when you are shopping around, especially if this is your first guitar amplifier, that you try out as many as you can. Try also using the same guitar played through many amps, as well as testing them with high and low volumes to get a good feel for each amplifier. Many things come into play that will have a dynamic effect on the sound you get. Things like string gauge, the action on the guitar, and even the pick you are using.

Don’t be afraid to research any amps you have your eye on either. There are a lot of great resources on line.
